The Forgotten Pages (Memories from the Vanishing World)

Directed by

Er. Abdul Rashid Bhat

This Short film is a deeply personal reflection on memory, family, nature, and the true meaning of progress. Through the eyes of a Kashmiri villager, the film journeys from a world scarred by global wars and rapid industrialization into a quieter landscape where life once moved with the rhythms of the earth.
Born in an era when mornings arrived with birdsong rather than alarms, the narrator recalls a childhood shaped by paddy fields, mountain streams, bullock-drawn ploughs, horse-drawn tangas, and evenings spent beneath walnut trees. His father cultivated the land, his brother connected villages through a simple horse cart, and his mother held the family together with unwavering warmth. Though materially poor, they lived rich lives rooted in community, presence, and harmony with nature.
As the narrator grows, marries, and raises a family of his own, the world beyond the valley changes dramatically. Industrialization brings medicine, electricity, roads, and modern comforts, but it also transforms landscapes, fragments communities, and weakens humanity’s connection to the natural world. Forests give way to concrete, streams become channels, and conversations are replaced by screens.

Blending personal memoir with environmental reflection, the film explores what humanity has gained—and what it may have lost—in its pursuit of progress. Through intimate recollections and evocative imagery, it asks a timeless question: as we became wealthier, faster, and more powerful, did we also become strangers to one another and to the earth that sustains us?

A meditation on memory, belonging, and balance, this documentary invites audiences to reconsider the meaning of prosperity in an increasingly restless world.
