The Egret and the Sea
The Egret and the Sea is a short story about promises, companionship, and farewell. Lin An, a seriously ill woman who works as a patient guide at a hospital, is known as “Xiao An” to the patients she helps. She promises a little boy named Xiaoman that she will take him to see the sea. In the end, Lin An is unable to keep her promise, and entrusts it to the fellow patients around her. Carrying the egret pendant Lin An gave him, Xiaoman finally makes it to the sea—one last time, for her.
