Poem-Sculptures of Katsuhiko Azuma

Directed by
Dr. Santosh Kumar Jha

Video Synopsis:
(i.) Dedication and Theme: This video is a poetic presentation dedicated to the veteran Japanese sculptor, Mr Katsuhiko Azuma. The poem illustrates a unique confluence of Japanese architecture, art, culture, and the philosophy of nature worship.
(ii.) Importance of Earth and Art: The poem highlights the significance of earth (clay), its natural form, and its diverse conceptual representations in various artworks. It demonstrates how Azuma shapes clay and wood to create diverse cultural and architectural forms.
(iii.) Background and Context: This poem is based on the outcomes of an online interview and art-preservation programme organised by ‘Formative Creators’ on 9th July 2021, during the global pandemic lockdown. This interview was broadcast in three instalments in July and August 2021—the objective of which was to preserve the distinctive works of this veteran artisan for the next generation and to present them on a global platform. (It may be noted that at that time, doctors estimated the highest risk of mortality due to COVID-19 to be amongst the elderly). In such a situation, I deemed it essential to preserve his commendable work and knowledge. All the artworks displayed in this video are original creations of Katsuhiko Azuma.
