To freedom with the “Enge”

Directed by

Priit Laineste

The Great Escape – this was a mass escape from the invading Soviet Red Army in Estonia in the late summer and autumn of 1944. Thousands, on their way to freedom, found their final resting place in the stormy waves of the Baltic Sea, never seeing free land. “Freedom Regatta 1944” deals with the reasons
and process of the escape why and how they went, how they reached the Swedish shore. We tell the stories of the refugees, those who reached the shores of Sweden. Their descendants also share their memories. During the making of the film, the two-masted sailing ship LISETTE traveled the same journey that the Enge and other ships made 80 years ago, across the Baltic Sea from Hiiumaa to Sweden.
